A semi-abandoned area adjacent a skater park in Asheville caught my attention. It consisted of various buildings, both used and unused, each festooned with graffiti. I was drawn to shoot there on my own, but also wanted to shoot there with models. Against a backdrop of abandoned and graffitied buildings, I imagined multilayered images of a model tossing lentils and beans from cups. I would capture their suspension with a flash or fast shutter.

I met the model Katrin Dohse in late spring 2015 and liked her freshness and strength. She had, I soon learned, superb concentration and became adept at spilling grains and beans from a cup in a uniform and elegant manner.
